Futsal..

Posted by y. 源

Yesterday went for futsal again with my batchmates at the LIMA exhibition hall. Yes, again futsal. Third time already. Haha. If you had been to the LIMA last year, I am sure you noticed the huge hall where various aviation-related companies used to promote their stuffs. They started with two courts, now beginning to expand their business by building four more futsal courts and two badminton courts. It's good to see them utilise the hall for sport purposes rather than letting it to store dust.

Anyway, did I mention in my previous post that Thielert Aircraft Engines has gone into bankruptcy? Well, this company is responsible to provide the engines for the aircraft which I am gonna fly for the next 100hours. Now that it's bankrupt, the school has decided to use TB-10s for flying again. So, the junior batches are quite unlucky to fly those aircrafts soon like Batch 20 (starting next Monday) and Batch 21.

To be honest, I am still not sure whether my batch has to go for TB-10 conversion or not because there is no news from the flying wing yet. I heard from seniors that the spare parts for Diamond 40 have not arrived for quite some time already. And, the number of serviceable aircrafts is getting less too. Guess what, there are 5 propeller strikes since January to May, one in each month. Awesome right?? One prop strike equals a 100K gone. First four prop strikes involved solo students. And the last one was a dual sortie (instructor and student). Apparently the instructor, Captain L could not react fast enough to prevent the accident. In the end, both the instructor and the student have been grounded for a month. I am not really surprised though. Two weeks before I finished my PPL flying phase, this Captain L had just arrived at our school with two other flying instructors, Captain P and Captain K. Three days later, P and K already passed their instructor tests but not L. It was only a month later when I heard from seniors he finally passed the test.

I am not really keen to fly TB10 actually cuz it's quite a hassle to go for conversion hours. And I think some of us also may take some time to get used to switch from flying control stick to control column. Another thing is that TB10 requires pilots to keep adjusting the mixture control for different level of flight, while for Diamond 40 everything is automatically controlled by the Engine Control Unit (ECU). In short, to compare between Diamond 40 and TB10 is just like an auto transmission Nissan Cefiro to a manual transmission tank.

Talking about the junior batches, especially Batch 21, I pity them really. They have to wear uniform with the school's logo printed on the top right. For fcuk sake, it's damn ugly. They are the first batch to wear that kinda uniforms, you know. It's as if like there is only one size that fits all. Again, this is another source of income for the school. Oh yeah, if you are wondering how much they paid for this intake..........

it's 272K..

The fee has increased hell alot since the first day I entered this school. According to my contract, the fee was 180K as of 23rd Oct 2007. Then batch 20 came in this year March and the fee was 220K. Batch 21 came in May 2008 and the fee is currently as stated above. Batch 21 guys said that they had to pay 4000bucks for those photostated copies of PPL books! Haha. Mind you, the books are only worth at most 100bucks if they were to photostat those books themselves.

I am not sure about other flying schools, but I know this blood-sucking school is the currently ranked THE MOST EXPENSIVE FLYING SCHOOL in this country. Recently they have come up with another idea of sucking our money again, that is, we cadets have to pay 100bucks for the Diamond 40 Aircraft Flight Manual and checklist. Again, the books are of photocopies from the original AFM. Our batch actually thought of just share and buy one set and then photocopy for the rest by ourselves.

Do you think the school gonna agree with our fantastic idea? Of course not.

As far as we are concerned, the payment for the AFM and the checklist should have been included in our fees!! So we agreed to talk to our sponsoring company regarding the matter above and hopefully they will be able to clarify it soon.

By the way, I have been trying to log in MAS websites for four days straight already but to no avail. Damnit. The response to the low fare campaign is really good. I wanna book tickets also cannot. Bloody hell.

*Ever crossed your mind why I wanna book tickets? Pssst..don't tell anyone if you know the answer!*

Fever subsided.

Recovering almost 100%.

By the way, last Monday's Nav test result is out. I thought I did badly especially in my Nav plotting. What came out during the test was not even taught by the instructor!! Bloody hell. But I still managed to get 83%. Lucky me.

Out of all the subjects, this Nav Plotting subject is the only subject which I have no idea what I am doing. Now already enter end of May, and with the syllabus of Nav Plotting coming to an end, I can't believe I am still struggling to understand this subject. Nav Plotting is about plotting of charts, given some flight plans (telling you to fly from A to B to C to D), calculation of wind speed, ground speed, ETA, measuring distance and then log the necessary info into the log sheet.

That's is only a general view.

But to actually PLOT and LOG, I am really clueless, thanks to my instructor. He tells us what to do, but not showing us how to do. There is not one complete example that we can refer to. So the only way to learn is to make mistakes (as many as possible) in tests!

Fever..

My whole body has been aching since yesterday noon. Especially spine and right elbow. Feel so heavy and restless. Then now got sore throat and flu summore. Pus is growing underneath my right eye too. Later will have to go clinic to get some medication. Tomorrow got test and I can't focus at all.

Shit..

Resit!

Posted by y. 源

Countdown 53 days to my final exam of CA6. This whole week was full of tests everyday. Flight Planning, Meteorology, Navigation, and Instruments! There wasn't any test for Radio Aids cuz our instructor is on leave and the class was taken over by another instructor. Next Monday we will have another Navigation test again. Tiring!

By the way, these are the results of the tests which I managed to get yesterday:
Flight Planning - 91%
Navigation - 81%

Meteorology - 67%

Meteorology (re-sit) - 92%

Yeah, I failed the first Meteorology test. The questions were tricky in the sense that they played around with English. And, I think I have to brush up on my geography. Haha. There were two questions as follows:

Q: Where is the location of the polar front that forms during the summer?
A: From Newfoundland to North of Scotland.

Q: Location of the polar front during winter?
A: From Florida to South West of England.

And of course, I "shot" the wrong answer . I don't know where are Florida and Newfoundland and I did not expect they asked the questions until that detailed! Damn. This are the maps of Newfoundland, Florida, Scotland, and England, and a world map for those who are Geography Idiots, like me. Haha.

Are you thinking that I was the only one who failed? There were 8 out of 17 guys who failed, that was why our instructor had to call for a resit. I was more careful this time and passed with three mistakes out of 38 questions.

Fever today. Ahh...

Icing Part 2

Posted by y. 源

Generally, Icing is divided into two types:
1) Opaque Rime (or Rime Ice)
2) Clear Ice (or Glaze Ice)

Opaque Rime
This type of icing that forms on aircraft skin is brittle because it normally happens when small Supercooled Water Droplets (SCWD) strike on the aircraft skin and become frozen immediately and thus trapping pockets of air inside it. Rime ice is easily removed and lighter than Clear Ice.

Clear Ice
Clear ice is normally associated with large SCWD. During impact with aircraft skin, only a small portion of the droplets freezes, while the remaining portion flows back over the surface and freezes gradually as a smooth solid sheet of ice. It is much harder to removed and heavier as compared to Rime Ice.

Effects of Icing on aircraft:
1) Increase stalling speed and decreases stalling angle
2) Increase total weight of aircraft
3) Increase drag
4) Decrease top of climb
5) Decrease rate of climb
6) Controls may frozen up
7) Lift is reduced.
8) Windscreen become blurry - Visibility is reduced.
9) Pitot head and static vent may be blocked - Pressure-related instruments will become useless.
10) Engine flame out.

Icing

To those who have watched Ironman, I am sure you noticed that when Ironman and the bad guy (forgot his name) flew high up into the sky, both of them has ice particles accumulated on their armor suits.

Obviously, that is a phenomenon termed as Icing. Icing happens mainly due to Supercooled Water Droplets (SCWD) being held in suspension in the air. SCWD, as its name suggests, means that water droplets (not water vapour) are cooled down to below 0 degree Celcius and it still maintain its liquid form and not solid form.

Yes, I know you are thinking that it is impossible to have water remain in liquid form even below 0 degree Celcius.

Trust me. This is possible. And, there is reason for it. I will put it in a very simple way for you to understand.

For water vapour to condense to liquid, it needs hygroscopic nuclei. And for liquid to undergo sublimation to change its form into solid ice, it needs ice nuclei. However, when water vapour is cooled to below its freezing point and there is no ice nuclei around, that means only condensation can take place and hence water droplets are formed. These particles are what we called as SCWD and they are very unstable, mind you. They are in the air, awaiting any ice nuclei to come and form ice with them immediately.

Now can you tell me what is the biggest ice nuclei in the air?

Answer: Aeroplanes. The moment these SCWD touches the aircraft's skin, ice forms straightaway on it. Just like what you see in some of the scenes in Ironman (suit testing scene where he pushed the armor suit to the limit by flying high high up into the sky; the fighting scene where he lured his enemy to the same place too).

For icing to happen to an aircraft, there are conditions that need to be present:
1) Aircraft skin temperature is below zero and SCWD are present in the atmosphere; or
2) Outside air temperature is below zero and SCWD are present in the atmosphere.

In temperature band between 0-10degree Celcius, the air contains mainly large SCWD. Between 10-40degree Celcius, mainly mixture of small SCWD and ice crystals present. While temperature below 40degree Celcius contains only of ice crystals. Ice crystals are harmless.

For the next post, when I am free, I will post about types of Icing. And probably some of the icing consequences to an aircraft too.

Thursday got back Instrument second progress test paper and I only scored 80%. Yesterday did Meteorology progress test two also and on that day itself I got back my result which is merely 80%. Damn. Next Tuesday the third progress test for Meteorology. This weekend is full of homework to do too, like, Navigation Plotting, Flight Planning calculation of fuel for climb, cruise, descend, and diversion, and also have to do the Instrument exercises.

The course is getting tougher. Damnit.

Anyway, today the bloody school cut our electricity again on this beautiful Saturday morning. With no lights on, I can't study at all man. The room is dark even though I opened the door and window. Tell me to go to the common room to study? Even there also no electricity. And they still go the cheek to tell us to study everyday. BullS**t. There is not even a conducive environment for the students to study at all. This time the reason they gave is more ridiculous than ever before. They said a big shot is coming to the school today so they have to switch off the current until he goes back. Damn a$$ right?? What kinda a$$y reason is that?? Just in case you don't know, this big shot is the one who runs this school with his money.

The only reason I could think of is that the big shot wanna cut cost to the max. We here are being deprived of many things. You know, the amount of money that we pay for this course does not represent the services and facilities that we should get! Come on, students here are the customers! I won't be surprised if he decides to open this crewroom during weekend only.

Three days ago went to watch Ironman. Not a bad movie. 4 out of 5 stars. To those who plan to watch it, don't hesitate and go ahead. It's sure worth your money.
