Snatch thief!

Posted by y. 源

A snatch thief robbed a girl friend of mine few days ago. He grabbed Pinky's bag from behind and ran away as fast as he could with his motorbike. She was injured in the incident. Sustained some minor injuries.

According to her too, the police officers gave her a hard time when she tried to report the case.

This series of events is not strange to us, isn't it? It merely serves as a number in the police statistics, nothing more.

Until unless death occurs.

Then there will be wide publicity about the case.

Then the ministers and police departments will give their speech and spell out the measures to counter rising crimes.

Then after few weeks, the hype dies down.

And the case will be forgotten. Just like many many unsolved cases.

(http://www.aliran.com/oldsite/monthly/2004a/6e.html):
Citing police statistics, Lim Kit Siang, MP for Ipoh Timur, revealed in Parliament that there had been an increase in the number of reported snatch thefts these past years: from 14,368 reported cases in 2001, to 14,640 cases in 2002, to 15,798 cases in 2003. (The Star, 6 July 2004)

I've compiled some worth-to-take-note statistics from the Royal Bolehland Police Force website (http://www.rmp.gov.my/):

Rape
Year2000 --> 1,210 (300 solved)
Year2001 --> 1,354 (358 solved)
Year2002 --> 1,418 (333 solved)
Year2003 --> 1,471 (347 solved)
Year2004 --> 1,718 (383 solved)
Year2005 --> 1887 (1769 solved)
Year2006 --> 2435 (2238 solved)
Year2007 --> 3177 (2938 solved)

Snatch Thefts

Year2000 --> 15082 ( 166 solved)
Year2001 --> 14368 ( 7142 solved)
Year2002 --> 14640 ( 7886 solved)
Year2003 --> 15798 ( 8859 solved)
Year2004 --> 11536 ( 6197 solved)
Year2005 --> 9617 (5325 solved)
Year2006 --> 9551 (4264 solved)
Year2007 --> 11127 (4339 solved)

***Before I decided to post these stuffs, I wondered whether the figures reported in the official website are the truth or not.

Suffice to say it's my lack of confidence in the police force.

Admit it. It's not just me.***

Just came back from Batch 12's graduation ceremony. They were here for more than two years already. No surprise they looked so happy when they can get out from this place.

The same expression that I saw in the faces of all the ex-seniors.

Another month is about to over and it's fasting month for the Muslims starting of September 1st.

I am changing for a new blog skin. Tomorrow.

By the way, the DA40s have been released for flying already this morning. So, probably the cause of the crash was not due to aircraft problem.

9M-HMT

Posted by y. 源

I just realised that the wrecked aircraft was one of the aircrafts that I flew most during my PPL flying stage.

9M-HMT (Niner Mike Hotel Mike Tango, this is the way of pronunciation in aviation field).

Before its engine was changed to the new 2.0Engine, I did not have much to complain about the aircraft except for the super sensitive pre-stall warning sound.

This aircraft was also the first aircraft to change to the 2.0Engine. It was tested for many weeks on ground and then in the air before it was certified to be released for flying. No solo flying was allowed for the aircraft initially. Like cars, new engines normally have problems although they have been tested alot of times. Ditto for aircrafts.

So 9M-HMT was only for mutual flying (cadet+instructor) until they (the engineers and instructors) satisfied with the aircraft performance. I think it was like a month later then only they allowed solo students to fly it.

I flew with my instructor in that aircraft for local sortie, with the newly-fitted engine. Seriously, the engine was very powerful! Goddamn it was fast! It felt like fitting a turbocharger in a bicycle!

But there was a problem.

The previous engine was of a smaller cc, hence producing lesser power and lesser RPM as compared to the 2.0Engine.
The RPM indicator was designed and calibrated based on the older engine RPM. So it tended to show overspeed whenever we wanted to go full throttle. Many at times we had to abort take-off due to the RPM overspeed.

If you are thinking why we couldn't just take-off with RPM overspeed, try think about the structural limit of a propeller. It is not fun at all to fly an aircraft with a propeller broken into pieces.

The engineers realised the problem and had the panel changed later.

This was not the only problem affecting the aircraft. I shall not talk more about it. Haha.

Come to think of it, I am glad that nothing serious happened to me when I flew that aircraft alone!

Updates on crash..

I just saw the news in RTM1. You should see the condition of the aircraft. The cockpit was completely smashed! It's a miracle that the other guy survived the accident.

The flying wing has been grounded until further notice. I hope the investigation can give justice to Mohd Ariff.

Death of a friend...

Posted by y. 源

If you have been following my post, I blogged about quite a few of aircraft accidents (engine failures, structure defects, etc) involving this school. All of the cadets & flying instructors escaped unhurt or at most with minor injury.

But not this time. Not today.

One of my colleague has passed away.

My senior. Age 20. Batch 14. Mohd Ariff from SJ.

We heard about the news that he was doing mutual instrument flying with his batchmate, Mohd Farid evening yesterday and then went missing. Hours later, another news came that they were last seen crash landed into a forest.

And it was only this morning, they were found. The report from KT tower was that both of them were found with serious injury and still alive.

Minutes later, another call came. And the rest I need not to say.

For more details, please go to Berita Harian Online.

Report when they went missing:

Today's report:

May peace and strength prevail within the family members of Mohd Ariff. The other guy, Mohd Farid, is in ICU now. Hopefully, he will be fine.

And oh yeah, another 153 people died in a crash at Madrid airport. Check out the news in The Star.

After a long long wait...

Finally, the computers here are fixed. But there is one problem. We can't install the latest flash player nor the adobe.

So we can't view chinese characters.
And, we can't play some of the Facebook games.

We need the admin's passwords in order to install those stuffs.
And we can keep on dreaming they will give us the passwords.

Oh yeah, just wanna clear things up. This school is a private institution.
So everything I said about this school in this blog, whether good or bad, is not referring to any airlines.

:)

Wth...

Just found a superb template minutes ago. Still need to make some changes in it first before I can use that template.

Anyway, the school just informed us that we won't be going for Twin Engine Simulator. Damnit. How many times they wanna change their plan?

Secondly, which is a good news, is that we will start flying on the 29th of September and we only have a time limit of 88days to complete our Single Engine hours.

I don't really put too much hope in that though. You know, the school has a habit of FFK all of us.

All the time.

Malaysia Airlines profits fall 64.6 pct in second quarter

Posted by y. 源

Malaysia Airlines profits for the second quarter plummeted 64.6 percent from a year earlier to 40 million ringgit (12 million dollars) on surging fuel costs, the company said Monday.

It said it managed to sustain profits for eight successive quarters "despite an extremely challenging business environment," and warned of "extremely challenging" times ahead.

"The perfect storm has landed, with the high price of oil taking a heavy toll on the industry. 25 airlines have declared bankruptcy while airlines in the region have declared massive losses or lower profits," CEO Idris Jala said in a statement.

"It's an extremely tough environment, and with overcapacity and global downturn, the situation is going to get even more challenging," he said.

For the six months to June 2008, net profit was down 35 percent to 160 million ringgit while revenue was 7.0 percent higher at 7.53 billion ringgit from 7.03 billion a year ago.

Jala said the airline was aggressively working at mitigating high fuel prices through its own pricing and other measures to ensure leaner operations and boost revenue.

It has already axed loss-making routes, hiked fuel charges by 25-80 percent on most routes, imposed a freeze on recruitment and launched a low-fare campaign to sell otherwise unsold seats.

"Such measures are proving to be effective, and I am pleased that we were able to make a net profit of 40 million ringgit in the most difficult business environment in the airline industry's history," Jala said.

The company said the business environment will likely remain challenging as fuel prices remained high, while passenger demand falls on a global economic downturn.

It posted an all-time record profit of 851 million ringgit for the 2007 financial year, ending a series of disastrous losses.

How about........

another four years more for Bolehland to get an Olympics Gold medal?

Huge disappointment, folks....

A good deed done!

Posted by y. 源

I was watching the Olympics highlights in the common room this morning when a Bangladeshi worker asking me for keys.

"What keys?" I asked.

"Someone fell down outside. Fit. Save him please." He pointed outside the fence.

I recognised that old man. He is always alone, with his shabby clothes and soiled pants, wandering at nearby the beach.

The old man was still lying on the road, his head was bleeding and his limbs were trembling heavily.

I couldn't climb through the tall fence. The school gate is located very far away. I needed to find something, or someone who could prevent him from biting off his tongue.

Luckily a pakcik who was riding past saw the incident, stopped by the roadside and went to help the poor old man. Using his fingers, he massaged the old man's feet. It seemed to be able to stop the fit.

I ran outside to help the pakcik to carry the old man to the roadside. The old man regained consciousness, asking for his food. I looked around and saw a polystyrene-made packet near the place where he fell.

We wanted to send him to hospital. But he said he wanted to go home. He could even barely stand still! The kind pakcik offered to fetch him back home. He asked me to tag along, just to make sure the old man did not fall off from the motorbike.

The old man's house is actually a small abandoned mosque nearby my school. We accompanied him until the doorstep. He said he should be alright and told us to go home. Both of us worried of leaving him alone there but he insisted that he could take care of himself.

So we left and the pakcik fetched me back to school.

God bless the old man.

The people are fighting in the aisle.

19/8/1980, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - Less than 7mins after take-off, a Saudi Lockheed Tristar had not long settled into en-route climb when a cargo compartment smoke light illuminated, accompanied by aural warning.

The crew took nearly 4.5mins to decide that the warning was genuine. 78miles out, the Captain told Riyadh he was returning, with fire in cabin.

The rest of the story is hard to believe.

The Captain made little attempt to organize the emergency, focusing on flying the aircraft. When the flight attendants asked him for advice, saying that "The people are fighting in the aisle", he merely muttered to himself.

The First Officer, very junior, took almost no part.

While the Flight Engineer appeared to be totally confused!

When the aircraft landed, the Captain made no attempt at an emergency stop, but continues slowly down the runway, and turned on to a taxiway, leaving the engines running for some minutes. When they finally shut down, no attempt was made for evacuation.

The fire crew eventually found 287 passengers and 14 crews dead, apparently from breathing toxic fumes.

What does your drawing say about YOU?

The results of your analysis say:

You tend to pursue many different activities simultaneously. When misfortune does happen, it doesn't actually dishearten you all that much.

You have a peaceful mind, viewing the world with calm and serenity. To you, life is not about struggle and strife but about existence and co-existence.

You like following the rules and being objective. You are precise and meticulous, and like to evaluate decisions before making them.

You have a sunny, cheerful disposition.

Happy Birthday to YW in advanced!! Another guy to join the 21st League!! It's time to win a few rounds at Genting Casino, dude! :P

Me?

Posted by y. 源

I had been wondering how many cadets are Johoreans since the first day I entered this school. And there are only three in this school. One is my batchmate who was born in Johor but moved to Selangor many years back. His dad, uncles, and grandfather were from my school!

Another one is a private cadet of Batch 15 who is from Bandar Baru Uda.

The third one is an ex-EC fella, a private of Batch 18 (I am in Batch 19 by the way.) and he is a year younger than me.

Me? I am not a Johorean!

Hey Xiuyu, I am actually from your hometown! =)

****************************************

The simulation training of B737 back in Subang there is still super congested. There is only ONE simulator and it is used by more than 100 cadets for 24hours a day, 7 days a week non-stop.

Many of the cadets who have just graduated from their respective flying schools are told to wait until further notice.

With just 800bucks a month to survive, it's insane to stay at kl to wait! Most decided to move back to their hometown.

At least, the cost of living won't be that high.

Visual acuity

Posted by y. 源

Do you know what is the meaning of 6/6 in the eye test report? I just found out about the answer when I read the Human Performance and Limitations book.

6/6 means that the smallest object that you can see at 6meters can be seen by a normal eye at 6meters. Or "perfect" eyesight.

If it's 6/10 then the smallest object that you can see at 6meters can be seen by a normal eye at 10meters. Obvious indication of short-sightedness, myopia.

There was a time when people wearing specs were not allowed to become pilots. But in today's world, rarely there are people with perfect eyesight. Which is why the rule of allowing pilots to wear specs came into force years back.

I have a batchmate, who did not know about this, went to have LASIK surgery done after he passed his interview two years ago. But when he went for medical checkup, the doctor failed him. Why? Based on medical reasons for pilots, the eyes need to re-adjust against the environment for a year after such surgery is done. Yeah, he needed to wait for a year before he was selected again.

Oh yeah, if your report says 20/20, it's actually the similar, just that the unit is different this time. It's in feet.

Anyway, I had been messing around with the html codes, testing out the best layout and finally decided with this one. Also, I have added the MAS blog here under the link of The Airline. Go have a look if you have the time. Very interesting!

MAS now also allows its staffs (who are not on shift duty) to take part time job.
I am already thinking on becoming a part time private tutor. Hahaha. Pilot+Private Tutor doesn't sound right. But hey, no harm earning more $$!! *ka-ching* ;P

It's weekend!!

My batchmates and I went for a basketball game at Kuah Town two days ago. Yeah, we had to travel for like 30minutes just for that. Played with a bunch of ah Bengs and ah Sengs. Sure enough, we lost to them in all three matches. Haha. Nevertheless, it was fun to play with those people and made new friends.

Batch 11 is graduating today. Due to the increased fees of 50K, some of them were unable to pay the fees in time, hence resulted their graduation to be delayed until today.

Just an advice to the people who plan to study piloting course as privates, I suggest you read the contract carefully before you sign it. Read ALL the terms and conditions. To give an example from my school, the contract with the privates is that the school can delay the course for as long as they want and they can increase the fees anytime. For mas cadets, they of course charge the fees to the company. And this translates to our bond fees. Ultimately, it is us, the cadets who have to fork out the $$ to pay it back.

By the way, after 13days of training to play guitar, I have finally mastered the intro of Qing Tian and Dandelions' Promise (by Jay Chou) and also a song called Spanish Romance. You know there is this Korean drama called Winter Sonata starred by Bae Yong Joon? Spanish Romance is one of the theme songs!

Preparation at the hotel should be done by now. Surprisingly, the school did not force us to attend the graduation ceremony. I might be going there later, to eat the free lunch. =P

Expenditure as of 31/07/08
Food&Drinks - 35.15
Games - 10.00
Petrol - 7.00
Handiplast - 1.50
Toiletries - 21.88
TOTAL = 75.53

Actually the $$ spent last month is much more than stated above. The trip back to jb cost more than 300bucks including chocos, air fares, and bus fares, which my dad refunded me already.

**I am still pondering whether to remove this security settings totally as it is causing alot of hassle to people without gmail. Maybe I will try out another setting sometime next week. Until then, please bear with it! Thank you very much.**
