Flight Day 27

Posted by y. 源

Today I flew Nav1, Solo Check to fly Navigation. Haha. The route was different from Nav Intro, which was I did not do Touch&Go at Alor Setar aerodrome (WMKA), and I flew straight to other townships down south. Basically everything went well. Wait, there was one minor problem. I was supposed to fly to Jeniang, one of the waypoints. A new place to me, so it was pretty hard to recognise the township and the terrain there. According to the map, the place should be right beside a mountain, at the foot of the mountain. But when I looked outside, it was all mountains and hills and I could hardly see any township! For your info, this aircraft is installed with GPS system, like the ones you see in cars, digital maps. It was only when I glanced at the GPS system I realised that Jeniang was on my left, about 5 nautical miles. There it is! A small small town in between those hills.

Now I gonna make sure I remember the route and the image of the town because I gonna be flying solo tomorrow morning using the same route again next time. Haha. It's gonna be fun flying solo to outside of the island. Of course, if something happens to me (lost my way, etc), then I can only rely on myself to get things right!! =D

Today I thought I was able to complete my GH6, but hey, the aircraft's left fuel tank probe got problem. Fuel Indicator fluctuated, according to the remark given by the engineers. I decided to cancel my sortie because the endurance was only 3 hours left. 3 hours of endurance means 18 USG (9 USG in each tank). Since the engine consumes fuel from the left tank (main tank), this implies that I will not be able to determine when to transfer the fuel from right tank to left tank. I won't even know when will the left tank becomes empty. You know what happens to a car when it runs out of fuel. You can still park your car by the roadside.

What do you think a pilot can do when the aircraft runs out of fuel?

Answer: Make an emergency landing on the most suitable place.

What you should do if there is no suitable place to land at all?

Answer: PRAY HARD.

Just joking. That is not the way! Out of all the unsuitable places to land, there is sure to have at least ONE suitable place to land. Just maintain glide speed and keep a lookout the wind direction because we want to land into the wind. Just like PFL (Practice Forced Landing)!
