AirAsia plans to continue to grow through the crisis, but is only hiring employees related to growing operational areas, including flight crews and cabin staff.

In Australia, Virgin Blue's CEO, Brett Godfrey, has vowed not to retrench staff in response to record high fuel prices. The airline's 4800-strong staff will expand to 6000 as it rolls out its regional expansion and international offshoot V Australia prepares to launch services from Sydney to Los Angeles in December.

Emirates, which is taking delivery of two widebodies per month over the next 58 months, including 58 A380s, is undertaking a recruitment drive unmatched in civil aviation history. This year alone, the Dubai-based carrier aims to recruit 12,000 staff and a worldwide recruitment drive has begun.

Qatar Airways and Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways are also expanding. Etihad plans to increase its workforce from about 4000 to as many as 5000, including 500 new cabin crew, by the end of the year.
